JOB DESCRIPTION

PARKS DEPARTMENT LABORER

GENERAL PURPOSE:

To perform various duties as instructed relating to the maintenance of Township parks buildings and facilities.  Work tasks include: mowing, landscaping, tree trimming, field repair, fence work, janitorial tasks and building repairs and paintings as well as snow plowing and salting roads and parking areas.  Equipment necessary to be operated to include large and small mowers, small and large dump trucks, various salting equipment, chain saws, brush chippers, weed wacker and various hand tools. Other work tasks include assisting other departments such as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintaining fields and grounds to ensure the safety of participants and spectators.

Mowing turf areas using large and small equipment

Field layout and striping

Infield maintenance, repair and grooming

Facility repair including fencing, playground equipment, bleachers, etc.

Building maintenance and repair including cleaning, painting and janitorial service

Maintains and operates various equipment as required including cleaning, greasing, washing and reporting to the supervisor any maintenance requirements.

Proper operation of small and large trucks used in winter operations (i.e. plowing and deicing)

Assist other departments as required

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent

Experience involving mowing, landscaping, building repair and the proper operation of related machinery preferred

Snow plowing and salting experience

Necessary Knowledge skills and abilities:

Knowledge of the operating principles of mowers, trucks and small equipment

Basic knowledge of the safe and proper operation of mowing equipment, chain saws, brush chippers and landscaping techniques.

Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing where necessary: ability to observe proper safety precautions; ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the public; ability to perform heavy manual tasks under varying weather conditions; ability to drive and operate a variety of vehicles and equipment under varying weather conditions.

Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations to determine area and volume.

New Township employees are subject to a background check, pre-employment drug screening and a ninety (90) working day probationary period.  

Existing employees are subject to a thirty (30) day probationary period

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Valid NJ CDL Class B drivers license with air brake endorsement or ability to obtain within 6 months

Preferred candidate should reside within 20 minute travel time

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works outside in all weather conditions.  The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to cold, wet and/or humid conditions and a loud work environment.
